CONSERVATIVE RESTORATIVE CARE

Inlays & Onlays

Inlays and onlays offer a conservative way to restore your tooth using strong, beautiful porcelain. Each restoration is custom-made to fit like a piece of a puzzle and bonded to your tooth, helping preserve healthy tooth structure.

Porcelain restorations lifted above their matching prepared tooth spaces: an inlay on the left, an onlay in the middle and a crown on the right.

What is an inlay?

An inlay fits within the grooves of a tooth, between the raised chewing points called cusps.

What is an onlay?

An onlay covers one or more cusps to restore a larger damaged area of the chewing surface.

What is a crown?

A crown fits over the prepared tooth to provide more extensive coverage when needed.

From left to right: an inlay fits inside the tooth, an onlay covers one or more cusps, and a crown covers the prepared tooth more fully. Illustration is simplified.

A Personalized Approach to Restoring Your Tooth

The right restoration depends on your tooth. We discuss whether a filling, inlay, onlay or crown is appropriate, along with material choices, appearance and cost. Tooth-colored ceramic or composite may be options depending on your needs.

What to Expect

Treatment involves evaluating and preparing the tooth, taking an impression or digital scan, and checking the fit and bite before the custom restoration is bonded or cemented in place. A temporary restoration and a separate placement visit may be needed. Your dentist will explain the expected sequence.

Caring for Your Restoration

Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and keep regular dental visits. The tooth around the restoration can still develop decay. Longevity varies with the material, bite, oral hygiene and habits such as grinding.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are inlays and onlays different from crowns?

An inlay repairs the area between the cusps, and an onlay covers one or more cusps. A crown covers the prepared tooth more extensively. The amount and location of damage help determine which option is appropriate.

Will insurance cover an inlay or onlay?

Coverage and out-of-pocket costs depend on your plan and treatment. Our team can help review your benefits and provide an estimate before you decide.
